How to use the character count functionality to improve file formatting

This article explains how to use the character count functionality to improve file formatting.

Character count changes in language translation

Language growth is the main cause of most formatting re-work. Translated text often takes up more space than English text because the translated language uses more words and characters than English. In addition, many languages use more diacritic marks, such as umlauts (ä, ö, ü) and the eszett (ß), which take up additional space compared to English letters.

As a rule of thumb, more than 10% language growth typically requires formatting adjustments. To reduce re-work Pairaphrase provides you with a character count of both the source text and the translated text.

Character count functionality in Pairaphrase

You will find the character count next to each segment in the target language column. When the translated character count exceeds or falls below the source by more than 10%, the number will appear in red. This is a visual cue that this segment may cause your layout to break. You can then decide on a course of action: whether to truncate the translation manually or use the Truncate with PairaphraseGPT feature.
